Development of an autonomy module to improve up-time and efficiency of a laser cladding cell for volume production

The LMD-AUTO project is a solutions module whose target is the establishment of an automated laser-cladding process in order to save time and improve the efficiency of a laser-cladding cell.

The solution

LCV implements Industry 4.0 sensing and control to monitor and actively regulate the laser cladding process. It does this both in the upstream path (laser, optics, ..) as well as the downstream path (clad, part, ….). The Trinity cell also enables autonomous operation with camera-controlled bin-picking and robot-welding.

Challenge

Laser cladding is a technology with a strong value proposition for wear and corrosion protection of critical assets. However, to upscale the laser cladding for volume production, the uptime and yield must improve. To improve productivity, a 24/7-autonomous mode must be established.

Impact

Measurable increase in Laser-On-Time, Uptime and yield.
