BRILLIANT's objective include the creation of a testbed, a working cell, which selects the right technologies for the Ideal-tek work cell and optimises the process parameters for an autonomous uptake of collaborative solutions; and the promotion of an artisanal manufacturing 4.0, combining human flexibility with the repeatability of cobots.
BRILLIANT designed, developed and deployed a smart, orchestrated and reconfigurable collaborative work cell for tweezers production. Specifically, the manufacturing operations that are being re-engineered towards the combination of the flexibility and dexterity of humans with repeatability of Cobots are blades welding, blades aligning, tail grinding, and cleaning of welding spots. The cell is composed by three retrofitted industrial equipments and a UR10 cobot. The solution led to remarkable results, including: +30% in productivity and OEE, 97% of in-quality tweezers, and -40% of repetitive and non ergonomic tasks. Despite the promise of easy-to-program robots and fast ramp-ups, small companies like Ideal-tek, which typically have to deal with huge variability of demand and consequently production of small lots, still struggle with an effective adoption of collaborative robotics. Ideal-tek production can be indeed defined as flexible artisanal manufacturing with more than 500 items in the catalogue that require skilled operators to be trained in the field. The expected support from flexible automation in terms of productivity increase, quality level and easiness of new product introduction is highly attractive for the company. It would allow responding efficiently to the market demand overcoming the existing barriers which have prevented the unleashing of this potential. BRILLIANT produces benefits at both ends of the collaboration it establishes: on the one hand, it aims to provide Ideal-tek, as a manufacturing SME with a turn-key solution that they can leverage to autonomously replicate the pilot results in other workcell within the company and make them collaborative in an intuitive and efficient way; on the other hand, it expands Holonix’ portfolio of IoT factory solutions with a powerful and versatile tool for the orchestration of collaborative industrial applications. For Ideal-tek, BRILLIANT is a unique opportunity to strengthen its competitive position in a market dominated by one of the highest labour cost in the world by increasing productivity and further enhancing quality through repeatability of the cobot.
